Dear Microsoft Help Desk,

I have the following problem with OneDrive and have been unable to properly sync my files.

OneDrive has a red ‘X’ on it.

When clicking on the red ‘x’, the pop up says,

“File or folder name problems.  Tap or click for more information.”

I click for more information.

New OneDrive box appears that says, “1 file can’t be synced with OneDrive.

            Name: Fun Fridgie Favorites

Error: This file name contains characters that aren’t allowed

Resolution: Please change the file name so it doesn’t begin or end with a space, end with a period, or begin with two periods.

I double click on the listed item.

The folder that contains the file opens in Explorer.

I right click on the file, select Rename, delete the current name and replace it.

The following message is received:

“Item Not Found   Could not find this item.

This is no longer located in C:\Users\OneDrive\Documents\3000 BOOKS\3400 CRAFTS HOBBIES DIY\3490 Cro-Quiltin’ MASTER Files\3492 Crochet\Leaflets & Booklets\Annie’s Attic\AA-87F88 FUN FRIDGIE FAVORITES by Various 1993. Verify the item’s location and try again.”

 Fun Fridgie Favorites

Type: File

Size: 3.45 MB

Date modified: 3/21/2018 5:17 PM

Availability status: Sync pending.

Try Again or Cancel are selection buttons given.

I hit Try Again button several times only to receive the same message after each time.

I hit Cancel Button and try to delete the file (since I don’t need it anyway, I have the original file which works fine and I really have no idea how this “file” with file type “file” was even created.

I still receive the EXACT same message as above.

Thank you in advance for your assistance in deleting this file so my OneDrive will start syncing properly again.  Oh, and I went out to my OneDrive online and deleted the file, but still won't delete or rename from my pc.

I also tried to run the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant, did all the current updates and when I tried to sign in it would not allow my Microsoft Userid and password … says it is not an acceptable domain, although I am signed into it right now!Sincerely,

Glenda

I had the same issue, Glenda.

What worked for me was adding the file to an archive and ensuring the option, "Delete files after compression" in the archive software was ticked. Once the archive process is complete, the pesky file disappears from the folder. You can then delete the archive file and you're good to go.

To add the file to an archive make sure you have something like 7zip or winrar installed. In my case I have 7zip so I would do this:

  1. Right-click the problem file and select "7-zip" from the context menu followed by the "Add to archive" option.
  2. In the Add to Archive dialogue, tick the "Delete files after compression" option
  3. Select the OK button.

The problem file will disappear and an archive (zip) file will appear in your folder in its place.

  1. Delete the archive file.

Hope this works for you too

    Lets try to reset Onedrive

    1. Press the Windows key + R.

In the Run window, enter: %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset

After 2 or 3 minutes OneDrive should start by itself, sometimes does not open.

In the Run window, enter: %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe

    Hope it works
