One note sharing error

Question

Using a surface 4 with Office 365 for business.  Have shared URL's to my Onedrive numerous times.  All of a sudden, when I try to share I get a box that pops up saying 'Please open a notebook with at least one section open in OneNote and try again'.  OneNote is open (btw - never needed to be in the past), but still not working.

Hi Gregg,

Thanks for the video. From your video, you want to use the share button on Microsoft Edge to clip the web notes to OneNote 2016. Refer to What's the difference between OneNote and OneNote 2016?, this feature should only available in OneNote for Windows 10.

Based on my test, if I open any notebook in OneNote for Windows 10 instead of OneNote 2016 desktop client, the share button can work well without the notification.

Please check the description about the share button on Edge. Have you tried to use OneNote for Windows app instead of OneNote 2016?

Hi Gregg,

For “All I am looking to do is clip the page and move to OneNote”, do you mean the “screen clipping” feature in OneNote? If so, what do you mean about “Have shared URL's to my OneDrive”? Based on my test, either the sharing or screen clipping feature works well by my side.

In the meantime, to narrow down the issue, please try to create a new test notebook to see if the issue happens to the new created one.

And I can’t see the screenshot about the version information. Can you upload it again?

For the video link, I mean that I want to collect the video about the issue from you. We will check the video to know more clearly how the issue looks like. Please provide us the video via the private message link.

1. Does the issue only happen to a specific notebook?  I only use one notebook
2. Please provide us the screenshot about the Office version via File > Account > Product Information. To protect your privacy, please help us mask the email address.   See below
3. Detailed steps how you “share URL to OneDrive”. For example, did you click Share > share with people? Share > get a sharing link? Or Share > move notebook? If that is convenient for you, we will appreciate you can provide us the reproduce video. You can provide the video via the private message I have sent to you. Please first try closing and re-opening the notebook to see if there’s any changes.

If the issue persists, please provide us the information below for more investigation:

1. Does the issue only happen to a specific notebook?
2. Is the notebook stored in your OneDrive for Business or OneDrive personal account?
