Hello. I'm Rey, a Community Expert willing to help the users.

If you perform a speed test on the user's PC what's the result?. Do this happens with Sharepoint only?

    Best Regards

    Hi Paul,

According to my understanding, the speed is slow when the users upload files to a SharePoint library or click the file to open in Online.

For example, the user uploads an Excel file to the SharePoint library or click a file to open it in Excel Online.

Please try to upload a file in different browsers to see if the uploading is slow in all browsers.

I would like to suggest them use OneDrive for Business sync client to upload file and open file in the OneDrive sync folder directly to see if it is still slow.

Here are the articles for your reference:

    1. Download OneDrive sync client.

    2. Click sync button in the SharePoint library and open OneDrive sync client to sync it.

Then there will be a OneDrive sync folder in File Explorer, the users can drag files to the folder to upload it to SharePoint and double click the files in the OneDrive sync folder to open it directly.

To better understand your situation and provide help for you, I need to confirm some information with you:

    1. Does the issue only happen with a specific user or all users?
    2. Does the issue happen in a modern site or a classic site?
    3. What is the size of the file? Could you please try to create a file with small size and upload it to SharePoint?
    4. When did the issue occur? Were there changes made prior to the issue occurring?
    5. Are there any error messages during the uploading?
    6. Does the issue happen in a specific document library or all libraries?

    Best Regards,

    Gloria

Our users complain that uploading or even opening excel docs is too slow. What can I do to increase the speed of this?

There's nothing you can do. SP is known to be a bloated, inefficiently coded and slow application. Look at how many lines of code used to generate one page and you'll see what I mean. Even transferring files between SP locations is slow so there's no doubt it's on Msft's end, not the users.

Msft can't really fix it because they haven't kept SP up to date with more modern technologies so changing the core functionality is a ginormous undertaking. It's easier for them to tinker with amateurish attempts at a modern look and feel than deal with the antiquated foundation of SP - so that's what they do!

To suggest using the sync client is a cop-out at best.  The sync experience is totally different  - it duplicates files locally and causes versioning and other problems. It also defeats the purpose of using cloud storage so should never be recommended.. Msft needs to be more honest about the performance of SP and stop trying to sell syncing which isn't what this thread's question is about.
