Row format in pivot table

How do I change the formatting of the row values in a pivot table? My row data is being displayed as a date but it should be a 6 digit integer number. I can change the formatting of the values fields, but not the row.  I have tried Field settings and Pivot Table Options > Layout & Format without success. I also checked the formatting in the table from where the data is obtained. And if I just change the cell formatting, the new formatting disappears next time I use the pivot table. Thank you.

You can try selecting the entire column and then format the column rather than driving it through pivot table. This is a pivot table limitation.

I tried that in the past, but when I change the formatting that way, it doesn't stay that way very long. I'm still trying to figure out what triggers the formatting to reverting back. Thank you for your response.
