Insert page number not working

My page number is not working and will not let me click in page number tab to insert mu numbers. Please help.

    If the page number button appears like

    rather than

    it would suggest that some form of protection has been applied to the document.

    If it is not disabled, as in the first image, where is the selection located when you are trying to use it.

    As an alternative to using that button, if you press ALT+SHIFT+P, a page field will be inserted at the location of the selection. or you can press CTRL+F9 to insert a pair of field delimiters, inside of which you insert the word { page }, or you can insert a page field via the Insert>Quick Parts>Field facility.

    The Page Number button will also be disabled if you are in Web Layout view.

    Hello Linda,

    Why it is not working? Is that option gray out? Please try opening Microsoft Word in Safe Mode:

    Use the /safe option to open an Office application

    This method works for most Office versions on a Windows PC:

    Right-click the Start button (lower-left corner) in Windows, and click Run.

    Alternatively, you can press the Windows logo key and the R key on your keyboard.

    In the Run box, type one of these commands:

    For Word: Type winword /safe, and click OK.

    See if the issue persists in safe mode, if not try the following:
