Text Vertical After Split Cell

When using the split cell function, all text becomes vertical and cannot be changed. Any thoughts?

    Select the affected cells. On the Table Tools Layout tab, click the Text Direction button repeatedly until you get the text direction that you want.

    Check the paragraph indents in the Paragraph dialog.

    That is what you can see in the two cells located to the left. It does not change anything.  The row below is a duplicate that was then merged and the error on longer persists.
