I am unable to insert a PDF file into my word document and display as a icon. There is limited features when using the Insert Object in Word.

There are more features when you use the Insert Object in Word using Windows.

Hence, I am able to attached a PDF file in Windows and display as an icon in Word file.

The readers can click if they are interested and it will open the pdf file.

I thought they are similar but it is actually not the case.

I don't see a question in your message. All I can do is confirm what you apparently realize... Object Linking & Embedding [OLE] is a Windows technology which is not supported by Apple. Only Word & Excel objects can be embedded.

Other object types embedded using a Windows version will display when the document is opened by a Mac Office program but cannot be opened. The document (assuming it is saved in one of the Open Office XML file types, e.g, .docx, .xlsx) must be unzipped which allows the object to be extracted... The steps for doing so are detailed by MVP Jim Gordon in this existing Community Answer:  Opening embedded documents in word

Thanks for your clarifications. There are still differences between the Windows and MAC version.

    Hi Richard,

    Thank you for your feedback.

Currently, I'm afraid it's limited to Word 2016 (Windows version) to display PDF file as an icon. We encourage and suggest you vote for When inserting an object: insert, object, from file, select an pdf file and try to insertion as icon. Doesn't function in new version. and Allow user to embed pdf files into word documents as icons. or deliver your feedback regarding this feature in Word for Mac UserVoice which is the best platform for us to listen from you and others to improve our products. Thank you for your understanding and feedback.

    Best Regards,

    Eli
