Thank you for confirming. If you don't have Malwarebytes installed in your computer and the issue persists, kindly access your OneNote 2016 application in safe mode. This would help us identify if an add-in or extension is causing the problem.

    1. Find the shortcut icon for your Office application.
    2. Press and hold the CTRL key and double-click the application shortcut.
    3. Click Yes when a window appears asking if you want to start the application in safe mode.

If running your app in safe mode and the issue still occurs, you can try repairing it by following the steps provided on this article. If running repair didn't help, you may proceed with uninstalling your Office by using the Easy Fix tool provided on the same article. Once done, reinstall your Office and check if you will experience the same problem.

    Update us on the result.

I do not have Malwarebytes installed on my computer, so updating the software will not benefit me.

    Hi VictoriaVG,

To isolate this case, I would like to confirm if you have Malwarebytes installed in your computer. If so, this might be the reason why you're receiving this error message. We recently had an issue with Office crashes or hangs after updating to Windows 10 and with Malwarebytes installed. This has been fixed by downloading the latest version of Malwarebytes v 3.1.2. For more information and to download this version, you may refer to this link or go to their Home Products Release History.

You may also refer to this article for more details about this error.
