Content Type Bug in Modern Document Libraries?

Anonymous
2018-09-27T23:07:17+00:00

Setup

Configure a Document Library to allow one custom Content Type which includes a Managed Metadata column.

Configure the default View of the library to be Grouped By the Managed Metadata column.

Create a folder in the library.

Browse to the folder.

Upload a document (not drag and drop) and assign it to one of the Managed Metadata values.

Upload a second document (not drag and drop) and assign it to another of the Managed Metadata column values.

Reproduce Bug

Using drag and drop, upload a document by dropping it on one of the groupings:

Note that the group by value is highlighted and the tag icon shows up to the left. This indicates that the document will be added to that group (i.e. tagged with that value).

The BUG

The document that has been uploaded in this manner (dropped on a specific Group By value) has not been assigned a Content Type at all. The only piece of metadata it has in the details pane is the Name with no way to assign a Content Type or other metadata:

Also note that clicking the Edit all link in the details pane also doesn't give the option to select a Content Type.

Is this a bug and if so, how soon could it be fixed?

[apologies for the delay, I was traveling for work]

    Answers to your questions:

    1. The default (and only) Content Type associated with the Document Library is the one in my screenshot above.
    2. The document appears in the correct Group (the one I dropped it on) but the Details panel is empty except for Name:

    3. I was unable to reproduce the issue in a new Document Library on the same Site. I didn't try another Site. 4. I will reply to your private message shortly.

    Hi Jim,

    Thanks for your update.

We understand the issue is that when you drop a document in a specific group by value, when you check the details pane on the right side, the Content Type and MetaData are not available in it.

Here is my test result, it seems I cannot reproduce the issue.

For troubleshooting, we'd like to confirm the following information:

1.What is the default content type in your document library?

You can check it via Library settings>Content Types>Change new button order and default content type>check which content type's Position from top is set to 1.

If Document content type(the document content type in a library) is set to 1, you may set your custom content type as the default type, then check if the issue still happens.

2.When you drop a document in a specific Group By value in the library, does the metadata column in the library show the value for the document automatically? Does the details pane show the metadata value for the document?

Please also provide a screenshot containing both the situation in the metadata column and the details pane for the document.

3.Does the issue happen in other libraries in the same site?

Does the issue happen in other sites?

4.For further troubleshooting, please help to collect related logs and provide your tenant information in private message.

    Regards,

    Tina

    Hello Tina,

Were you using the Modern Experience when you tested? I have to ask since you mention the Ribbon, which isn't present when you're in the Modern Experience...

Here is the screenshot of the Content Type (redacted on customer's behalf):

    Thanks,

    Hi Jim,

Thanks for sharing your experience with us.

I did a test at my end with the following steps:

1.Cretae a document library and add a Managed Metadata column in it.

2.Create a view of the library to be grouped by the Managed Metadata column.

(I didn't add a custom content type in the library as I'm not sure how the custom content type is configured on your side)

3.Create a folder in the library.

Then when I upload documents in the library via the Upload button in the ribbon, I can assign the Metadata value to it.

When I upload documents in the library by dragging and dropping, I can assign the Metadata value to the documents via selecting the document>in the details pane, click Edit all>it has the option for Metadata to select a Metadata value.

Without the content type added in the library, it seems the issue cannot be reproduced.

It seems the issue is related to the content type you configured. To check if it is a bug and check if we can reproduce the issue, could you help providing the following information?

Regarding "Configure a Document Library to allow one custom Content Type which includes a Managed Metadata column." Please let us know how you configure the content type including the metadata column in the library.

Could you share your steps with us?

Or you can capture some screenshots of the settings page for the content type.

This will helps us create a test environment and try to reproduce the issue.

    Regards,

    Tina
