I cannot get a whole number to appear in a cell.  The number 1 appears as 0.01 or if I change the decimal points to zero, then the 1 shows as 0. any ideas how I can get the numbering to work correctly please?

The issue isn't with Formatting, it has to do with a Preference setting.

Go to Excel> Preferences - Edit to clear the check on Display this number of decimal places. You'll have to re-enter any data previously affected.

I don't run a Mac but try in Editing Options to uncheck "Automatically add a decimal point"
