Endnote numbering sequence breakdowns after text cut-and-paste in Word

I am editing a large document in Word on Windows 365.

After cutting and pasting text from one page to another, I find that the endnotes are now missing their numbered sequence. I have moved text in two different ways: either dragging and clicking a small sentence or cutting and pasting using Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V.

Each time, the number of the original endnote disappears. So in my main text, there is a superscript (17) that in the next reference jumps to (20).

I do not think I have actually lost any text - only that the numbers are lost.

How do I gain them back without having to begin this document again?

This did not happen with all the previous versions of Word I have used (and I edited a large book in 2014).

Please help.

Thanks.

Click on the dialog launcher in the Footnotes section of the References tab of the ribbon and change the position of the Endnotes, then change it back again (to activate the Apply button) and then click the Apply button and see if that corrects the issue.

Do you have Track Changes enabled? Most types of numbering will sort themselves out only when changes are accepted.
