same problem with hover over comments not working

I'm running MS Office 365, Excel version 1804 (Build 9226.2126) on a Surface Pro 1, Windows 10

Some cells with comments do display the comments when the mouse hovers over the cell. Other cells with comments do not display,

they show the widely reported arrow and line extending beyond the cell.

Today is May 14. The cell comment display was working as of May 12th. What happened in two days?

I tried some of the prior suggestions: the Display options are set to Indicators on, display on hover and indeed

all the cells with comments show the red indicator. And some of the comments do display.

I closed the file, then restarted Excel by itself, then opened the file. Made no difference.

Editing the comments in a cell that's not displaying the comments does not show the comment for edit.

Instead, the worksheet jumps up to the top of the worksheet on its own.

What happened in two days? This thread started years ago but I never experienced a problem with comments until today.

    thanks for the response Jason.

I did have freeze panes on. I took it off, closed and reopened the workbook but the comments were not corrected. I didn't try your other suggestions.

These were 2 cells with comments on a worksheet with 10 comments total.

I use the worksheet to keep track of expenses, so it uses a running balance and some formulas use links to cell values on other sheets. No macros, so it's a pretty unsophisticated worksheet.

When I went back to it after reading your reply, I noticed that one of the comments had somehow moved to an empty cell in the same column. I was able to edit it, copy the text and just added the comment back to the original cell (after I deleted the comment in the original cell). Then it came up ok on a mouse hover.

When I selected to edit the other cell comment that just showed lines, I noticed two small size handles (squares) along with the lines. I was able to drag the handles and make the comment visible.

so for me at this point the issue is corrected without any clear reason why. I have a pending Windows 10 update today so I'll see what happens after that.

    Thanks again for your help.

    Tom

I'm not sure what happened in the last two days. Was the file modified during that time? There may have been an update to either Windows or Office that caused it.

    • Do you have freeze panes on? That can cause comments to do that.
    • You could try disabling hardware graphics acceleration:

    • You could try doing an online repair of your installation. The instructions are here:
