Word 2016 Document Names

Anonymous
2018-08-14T18:05:18+00:00

Whenever I have created a Word document, the title of the document - when I go to save it - has Always been the Top Line of the Document.  (It will stop the name, however, if there is any punctuation or symbols and only include the characters up to that point.)  Now my documents are NOT automatically naming. Does anyone know why this would have stopped, and how to get It back?  Thanks very much.

But the Save As screen (in the Backstage) has changed in recent versions of Word.

An ordinary Save (for example invoked by Ctrl+S) will "re-direct" to the classic Save As dialog box, which will suggest the first sentence as the file name (for an untitled document).

Over the last few days this has been reported by others. Are you on monthly updates in the insiders program? Others reporting this have been on that schedule.

If so, try backing off an update if you can. Also, report using the feedback mechanism.

If you use File>Save, instead of File>Save As, the filename field will be populated with the first line of text from your document.

It is not supposed to work that way.

Definitely try safe mode as describe earlier.

You should also report this as a bug to MS using the Feedback Hub

    .

    .

Send Bug Reports and Feature Requests (and even Rants <G>) to MS Developers and Managers using the Feedback Hub:

    .

“Official” MS does not pay much attention to this forum. However, you now can send your complaints, bug reports and feature requests directly to MS developers and managers using the “Feedback” process described in this link:

    .

Please post a share link to your feedback, back here, so other people who find your question will be able to vote for it and add their comments to it.

But Microsoft insists its combination of telemetry data and artificial intelligence (AI) actually made this update both "safe and fast", allowing it to identify problems early and block updates to hardware it will cause problems for.

Although MS does not tell you, when you are asking for help, we really do need to know specific the Windows (or Office) Edition, Version AND Build numbers you are running.

Contrary to MS's wishful thinking, we are all NOT running the "most recent" version (actually Version AND BUILD!) . Individual recurring, (obviously unfixed) Windows update errors cause people to be running older versions and builds. We commonly see people running versions of Windows that have fallen out of support because they are 18 months old due to unfixed update errors during that span of time.

    Hi Sarah,

As far as I know, it has not been stopped. Is this a problem with one document or all documents or something in between?

Does it happen if you open Word in Safe mode?

    https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Open-O...

Safe mode is not a way to regularly use Word, but it is a valuable diagnostic step. If your problem goes away when you use Safe mode, we can walk you through other steps that may help eliminate the problem. Please write back.

If it works in Safe mode, you may want to look at the following while waiting for more information from me or here on the forum.
