Sharing a folder with an external user

I have figured out how to share a specific folder with an external user with their email address.  The issue I am having is when I create another folder within that already shared folder, the external user does not have access to it.  Do I have to give the external user permission to each folder I create, even if it is within a folder I already gave permission?  Or is there a way to give the user permission to everything within the folder currently and anything I create in the future?  Thanks for the help.

Hi Rich,

You can click on subfolders>Share>Shared with>Advanced>check if they have unique permissions in the classic SharePoint interface in SharePoint Online. Please check them and let us know the outcome.

Meanwhile, do a test on other external users as well.

Thanks,

Cliff

    Hi Rich,

Have you checked the permissions for the subfolders? If you need further help on this issue, welcome to post back.

    Thanks,

    Cliff

I don't believe I am setting any unique permissions on that subfolder.  Just creating a new folder within the folder the external user has access to.  Is there a way to check if there are unique permissions?  I just want the the subfolder to adopt the permissions of the folder.

I will look to see if other external users are having the problem.

    Hi Rich,

No, you don’t need to give the permissions to everything in the folder. If you share the folder including subfolders and files with an external user with the corresponding permission, he should have the ability to access every subfolder and file in the folder.

So about the issue that he can’t access some subfolders in the folder, do you set some unique permissions on the subfolders?

Meanwhile, to check if the issue only happens in the specific folder or the specific external user.

    Thanks,

    Cliff
