How do I change the caption default to the item and number only (Table 1, Figure 2, etc.) rather than the entire caption?  Thanks.

When I insert a cross reference, the default is "insert reference to Entire caption"  This requires a click, scroll, and click to get to "Figure and number."  I want figure and number or table and number or numbered item number to the be the default. In short, I'd like to set my default cross reference.

In case it matters, not only is this is terribly time consuming for documents with lots of figures, but I have carpel tunnel, so  it's physically painful and becoming debilitating.  Keyboard commands are my best friends.

You could use a couple of macros

    For Figures

    SendKeys "FI{Tab}{Down}{Down}{Enter}"

    Dialogs(wdDialogInsertCrossReference).Show

    For Tables

    SendKeys "T{Tab}{Down}{Down}"

    Dialogs(wdDialogInsertCrossReference).Show

As far as I know, there is no way to change the default choice for "Insert reference to" in the Cross-reference dialog box.

However, in a Word session, once you have selected "Only label and number" that option will remain selected the next time you visit the dialog box.

    Hello,

I'm an independent advisor that Microsoft asked to assist customers. I'm an experienced user of Office but do not speak for Microsoft. I've been assisting my fellow users for more than 20 years. I hope I can help you.

I am not sure what it is that you mean. Could you explain further what it is that you are trying to do, how you are attempting it, and what is happening other than what you want?
