When will modern UI prompt users to fill in required metadata?

When uploading to a modern SharePoint library, the form doesn't automatically pop up after uploading to allow you to fill in the required fields.

You can fill the fields in manually using the properties or details panel however users can still work on and save changes in the document when editing in browser even when the required fields are empty, so there's no way to actually enforce the required metadata fields. Also if you're working in the desktop app rather than browser, it stops you from saving your work by saying "required fields are missing data" but you don't get this prompt in browser????

I've seen multiple posts from Microsoft saying that this is a bug or an error and a fix is being implemented however this was almost 5 years ago and it's still the same.

    Hi @WPotts
Currently, there is no clear time to indicate that this behavior will be changed in SharePoint online modern UI.

And per my test, as a workaround, we could enable check out in the document library to make sure the required properties are filled in before checking in files.

Hi thanks for the response! @Yi Lu_MSFT

In modern UI, if you try to drag and drop later versions of existing files into the library the system says you need to check out the files first (see below). However when in classic you can drag and drop later versions of files into the library with no problem, it just automatically matches the files and checks them out for you.
