OLE Server error when pasting chart from Excel

Hi,

I have recently been getting the OLE server error when trying to paste in Publisher a chart directly from Excel. The two programmes are from the Microsoft Office 365 Business suite for Windows 7.

I have investigated other workarounds and they seem to be along the lines of pasting the chart in as a picture rather than the editable chart. Unfortunately, the varying nature of the charts and their axes mean I need to be able to edit the chart in Publisher as well.

Does anyone know how to get around this problem. I have spoken to our in-house IT support and they have no experience with Publisher so I'm reaching out to the community in hopes of an answer.

I have no admin privileges so please let me know if this is something I will have to ask my IT to implement.

If you need any more information please let me know.

Thanks,

Phil

    Hi Phil,

If you can accept the Object way and need further help on the chart issue, could you provide the affected file for us to do a test to see if there are some ways working around the chart issue in the specific file?

    Thanks,

    Cliff

    Hi Phil,

You aren’t able to copy and paste a editable chart in Publisher 2016 directly. When directly copying the chart, the error messages may pop up. You can copy the Excel chart in another Office application first and then paste it to Publisher 2016. However, the chart is pasted as a picture which loses the Excel chart format. The feasible way is to use the Object option to link an Excel file to Publisher 2016, but it will copy all Excel data as you said and some specific charts and spreadsheets may not be fully linked. About the Object option doesn’t work in the chart you use, the issue may be related to the specific chart you use or the specific Excel file you use. I suggest you create a new chart in a new Excel file and then use the Object option to see the result.

Meanwhile, if you can accept the Object way, I’d like you to provide the affected Excel file in https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/privatemessage/inbox for us to do a test in our environment to see if the data in the file can be fully linked.

If you want to only copy and paste the chart in Publisher 2016 directly, I suggest you submit your feedback on our Office 365 UserVoice as it is the direct way for product developers to know users’ requirements and improve our products.

    Thanks,

    Cliff

    Hi Cliff,

The chart is a very simple bar chart created from a sole page of data in Excel. Previous to our upgrade to Office 365 I was able to simply ctrl+C, ctrl+V it into the document.

I tried to insert the chart using the Object>Create method described above and it resulted in the same error. I tried it with a different spreadsheet and it "worked", but the result was a pasting of the entire workbook rather than the chart. I simply want to paste the chart in.

Is this the info you need?

    Steps are:

    Copy chart

    Paste chart

    Error

    Thanks,

    Phil

    Hi Phil,

How do you insert the Excel chart in Publisher 2016? If you don’t insert it via Object>Create from File>Link, insert it via the steps to see and let us know the result.

Meanwhile, check if the issue happens when you insert a specific Excel file and upload a full screenshot of the Account page in the Publisher 2016 application you are using. You can access the page via File>Account.

Note: Remove any private information before uploading the screenshots.

Moreover, list the reproducing steps of the issue for our clarification.

    Thanks,

    Cliff
