Access Database deleted on compact

I have an Access database that is set to compact on close. I opened and then closed it quickly this morning, because I wanted to re-open with ribbons etc. enabled (shift-click) rather than to the form that is typically opened at start-up. However, when I closed it I got an error message that I dismissed, and now the database is gone. I have a backup but it does not include recent work (last 3-5 days, many changes have been made).

I came along this link which explains the issue, but the hotfix link they provide goes nowhere:  http://allenbrowne.com/bug-DeleteOnCompact.html

Is there any way to recover the database? Any way to avoid this happening again?

Side note, this is one of the MAIN reason I recommend turning that *feature* off.  If your database grows that much in between uses then that is what needs to be tackled.

Unless you have a back-up there may be no recovery.

I agree with Gina. You shouldn't use Compact on Close for this very reason. While I've never had it bite me, we hear about this situation all too often ...

    Hi A.W.M,

We feel so sorry for what you are encountering.

Per my research, I want to share this article with you to try to restore database. But the database only can be restored of you have backup of the database. For your reference, you can check steps in this article.

Moreover, you can try to find the files in Recycle bin if it stored in PC. Or if it stores in OneDrive, you can try to find in OneDrive recycle bin.  For you reference, you can have a look at this article and hope it could help.

However, our forum focus on dealing with issue of Office 365, and your case is about recovering Access Database. For better restoring the database of Access, we truly suggest you post in MSDN forum and you will have effective suggestion there.

    Thanks for your understanding.

    Best Regards,

    Ivy
