Modify Insert Symbol gallery

I would like to modify the gallery offered by the ribbon Insert Symbol icon.

That is, at the moment, to insert a symbol, I go to the Ribbon's Insert tab, then click the Symbol dropdown icon. It offers a set of what it considers 'frequently used' symbols. However, they don't take into account any special characters I use, unless I insert them using the Symbol sub-tab. In practice, I find the result pretty random on one computer, and on another, it doesn't seem to update at all.

I'd like to have more control over the Symbol dropdown selection. Note that this is a different question from assigning key combinations to frequently-used symbols. I already know how to do that.

Customizing the dialog box isn't possible, so right now you are left with assigning keyboard shortcuts, I'm afraid.

What you can do is post feedback for Microsoft and suggest a change in future versions of Word. Go to https://word.uservoice.com.
