custom numbering for appendices

Sorry for the bad subject line - mods, feel free to fix it.

I'm trying to set up some custom numbering for appendices in a Word document (2013).

I've created a new heading 1 called "AppHeader1"

So, beginning of an appendix section, I get:

Appendix A: Appendix Title

with an incrementing appendix Letter for each new appendix.

Now what I'd like to do is set numbering within the appendix as follows:

Appendix A: Appendix Title

A.1 This is heading level 2

A.1.1 This is heading level 3

Appendix B: Appendix Title

B.1 This is heading level 2

B.1.1 This is heading level 3

I imagine this is possible, but so far I've had no joy in figuring out in a way that's not manual.

In addition to this (maybe it should be a separate question), I'd like the page numbering to follow along, as well (e.g. A-1, A-2, A-n; B-1, B-2, ....)

Thanks in advance,

     Tom

The best way to do this is to use the upper levels in the Define new Multilevel List dialog

It is best to link that numbering to the default Heading # styles.

Using the above example where the Heading 7 style is used for the Appendix A, B, C, etc. in the Format Page Number dialog for the Sections of the Document containing the Appendices, in the Page Number Format dialog, you would check the box for Include chapter number and then select Heading 7 as the style that is used to start the chapter.

Doug has given you the correct solution, including the link to Shauna Kelly's excellent article. Although you could use a separate multilevel list for your appendix headings, the recommended approach using a list that is already linked to the built-in heading styles will be necessary if you want to incorporate the heading number in page numbers or captions because the "chapter number" that you can add to those numbers must be the paragraph number of an autonumbered paragraph in one of the built-in heading styles.

Since you've already defined your AppHeader1 style, the easiest transition to a built-in style is to make sure that the heading style (let's say Heading 7, as in Doug's example) is displayed in the Styles pane. Then click in one of your AppHeader1 paragraphs, right-click on Heading 7 in the Styles pane, and choose "Update Heading 7 to Match Selection." You can then also, if you prefer, add AppHeader1 as an alias for Heading 7 and even choose to display that instead of "Heading 7." It won't affect the ability to use it in page and caption numbering.
