SharePoint lookup column threshold

Hi,

All our applications which has a view or query more than 12 lookup column have recently stopped working. The SharePoint lookup column threshold for a query or view was more than 12 but looks like Microsoft has release a patch recently where the threshold lookup is changed from 12 to 10. Can you please let us know if that is the case and if there is any official release from Microsoft on it.

Thanks

    Dear Dhwanit,

    Thanks for your updates and confirmation.

    As the issue is about the Rest API query doesn’t work in your SharePoint Online environment and our category may have limited resources on this SharePoint development related issue, more resources may be involved on checking on this issue. For further investigation, I suggest you contact the administrator in your company if you aren’t the administrator and follow the steps in the article to open a ticket in the Office 365 admin center.

    To help you in speeding up in opening a ticket and solving the issue, I’d like to summarize the issue as follows.

    Issue Symptom:

    =================

    When using Rest API query _spPageContextInfo.webAbsoluteUrl + "/_api/Web/Lists/getbytitle('Test')/items?$expand=Author&$select=*,Author/Id" to fetch the dta from the list with the lookup columns, the query doesn’t work now in the customer’s environment.

    The following error message pops up.

    The query cannot be completed because the number of lookup columns it contains exceeds the lookup column threshold enforced by the administrator.

    Issue Environment:

    =============

    SharePoint Online

    Next Step:

    =============

    More resources may be involved on checking the issue in the customer’s environment.

    Your understanding is highly appreciated.

    Cliff

    Hi,

    Actually the issue is not with the view. We have 12 lookup columns in the SharePoint list and the data from the list was fetched through REST api. Earlier the below query used to work on client's environment -

    _spPageContextInfo.webAbsoluteUrl + "/_api/Web/Lists/getbytitle('Test')/items?$expand=Author&$select=*,Author/Id"

    But now the same query is throwing error on the client's environment-

    The query cannot be completed because the number of lookup columns it contains exceeds the lookup column threshold enforced by the administrator.

    We haven't changed anything on the site or list from where the data is fetched nor the admins have changed anything from their end. So, can you please let us know what could cause this issue?

    Thanks

    Dear Dhwanit,

    Based on my test, the threshold should be 12 in SharePoint Online and can’t be changed. If you can’t show up to 12 lookup columns in a single view in your environment, I suggest you create a new view to see if the issue goes away in your environment and if the issue only happens in a specific list and whether the issue happens in both classic SharePoint experience and the modern SharePoint experience.

    Meanwhile, check if you can reproduce the issue in your environment when using all browsers.

    If yes, I think that it should be an issue related to your tenant and more resources should be checked on your tenant. For further investigation, I suggest you contact the administrator in your company if you aren’t the administrator and follow the steps in the article to open a ticket in the Office 365 admin center.

    To help you in speeding up in opening a ticket, I’d like to summarize the issue as follows.

    Issue Symptom:

    =================

    The lookup column view threshold is changed to 10 in the customer’s list in SharePoint Online. The threshold should be 12 in SharePoint Online.

    Issue Environment:

    =============

    SharePoint Online

    Next Step:

    =============

    The issue may be something with the customer’s tenant and more resources may be involved on checking the issue in the customer’s environment.

    Best Regards,

    Cliff
