Date Modified Changes Upon opening file

I have hundreds of Folders with Word and Excel Files that I refer to frequently and need to keep in chronological order as to when created or last modified.  Recently I have noted that the files, if just opened for reference and then closed without any changes now have the current date and not the original date before opening.  This is unacceptable, since it makes all my chronological files unusable as they are no longer in chronological order when sorted by actual creation date or last modified date.  I’m currently using Windows 10 and Office 365.

I’ve tried the suggestions in the link below but without success.  I would also question why my problem has only recently surfaced and possibly only after the last Office update, and why the link comments are only from March 2018.

    Dear Igor,

In File Properties the dates are the correct original dates but the dates when accessing the list of Files in a Folder are the last date accessed even if you did not save the the File but only closed the file.

    Regards,

    Bob

When you open file even just to view it you are accessing the file so access date should be changed. You may add the Last change date column to Explorer window

Do you have any third-party antivirus who can scan every file you open?

    Hi Bob,

please open such file properties and check what date was changed - last access, create date or modify date.
