cannot open onedrive files backup

I backup my entire onedrive on an external drive quarterly.

When offline, i have in the past been able to view these backups but now any office products files are no longer opening.

I realize I can resync these files now and open them but thats not the point of a backup.  The point of a backup for me is when the cloud crashes or microsoft inadvertently wipes all my files off the face of the earth.

Should that happen, I would then have a boatload of backup files that I cannot open.

Why?

    Hi Amber,

To assist you accordingly with the files that are unable to open, I’d recommend contacting our OneDrive experts through in-app support. To do this, sign in to OneDrive.com from any browser, click the ? help icon on the top banner of the page and select Email OneDrive support. If you also have other OneDrive related concerns, you may raise it with them as they’re now handling all of it.

I synced my entire one drive to an external drive, then reset my onedrive to my local drive.  It's a full sync and the files are unable to open now.

What did you use for this backup?

Are you now saying that you have deleted Files in the File Explorer OneDrive folders? and require the previous backups?

In File explorer, your OneDrive folder the files may be stored both locally or only only on OneDrive cloud
