Office programs cannot open files on OneDrive

Hi,

I'm using MS Office Enterprise version in my office and build number is 16.0.10827.20181

My problem is, when I try to open MS Office files in OneDrive, it's quitting.

All the ways to open files in OneDrive are not working.

  1. When I double click the file on Windows Explorer, the loading display(like Microsoft Excel with green colored square and dots) pops up and it disappears in very short time, and nothing happens.
  2. Run office first then click File-Open-OneDrive then office quits suddenly.
  3. Run office first then click File-Open-Desktop-Document then find and click a file from open window and quits.

No error messages. It just quits. When I copy the file from OneDrive to local directory, then it opens.

And I have many machines, but problem is occurring on only 2 machines. One is Windows 10, and the other one is Windows 7.

Could you give me solutions please?

Thank you.

Hi Arck,

Thank you for your answer.

First, I'm sorry but I cannot update to latest version of OneDrive myself because of company policy.

And I just followed on your link, but there's a still problem. Please find below answers.

1.     Does the problem occur in ALL Office files (docs, xlsx, pptx, etc.)?

 - Yes, but .accdb is opened

2.     Can you open the non-Office files via OneDrive in File Explorer, such as pictures or videos?

  • I can open non-office files like .txt, .7z, .exe, etc.

3.     Create an Office document and save in OneDrive, does the problem occur in the newly created file?

  • I cannot even save a file because it's quitting right after I clicked File > Save(or Save as) > OneDrive.

4.     Run Office in safe mode first, then click File > Open > find OneDrive file and open it, wil the problem happen?

  • Yes, the problem is still happening in safe mode.

5.     What is the status of OneDrive files? Do all files in different states have this problem?

  • Yes, all of status are having this problem. And when I try to open a file with a cloud icon, the icon changes to green check mark, but just opening is failed.

And I guess it's not OneDrive's side because I already re-installed office on the Windows 10 machine yesterday, then the problem has solved.

Thank you again!

Kind regards,

    Hi Sodam,

Thanks for posting in the community and the detailed information, since the problem only happens OneDrive files, local files work normally, also as you said “problem is occurring on only 2 machines”, the issue is most likely a problem with the OneDrive application.

To confirm that, please try to go to OneDrive online and open files via browse, then click Open with Office Desktop Application, if the same OneDrive file on the same computer cannot be opened by the OneDrive client, but can be opened via the browser, please try to Reset OneDrive, besides, please make sure you are using the latest version of oneDrive.

If the problem persists, in order to narrow down the cause, please provide the following information:

    1.     Does the problem occur in ALL Office files (docs, xlsx, pptx, etc.)?

    2.     Can you open the non-Office files via OneDrive in File Explorer, such as pictures or videos?

    3.     Create an Office document and save in OneDrive, does the problem occur in the newly created file?

    4.     Run Office in safe mode first, then click File > Open > find OneDrive file and open it, wil the problem happen?

    5.     What is the status of OneDrive files? Do all files in different states have this problem?

Looking forward to your feedback and I’ll continue to help you.

    Best Regards,
