OneNote sync issue

Split from this thread.

I am having a similar issue, but I am receiving the above message on the online OneNote. Where on the App I have created new pages that are not being synced but are stated as "saved offline". When I go to the online OneNote two Notebooks with the same name appear, one without the new pages and the other is unable to be opened and gives this message: Something when wrong: Sorry, we are unable to reach the server right now. Please try again later.

{"code":"-1, Microsoft.SharePoint.Client.ResourceNotFoundException","message":{"lang":"en-US","value":"Cannot find resource for the request SP.RequestContext.current/web/GetFileByUrl(@a1)/ListItemAllFields/."},"status":404,"correlationId":"f4****b9"}

This would not be such a big problem if I only wanted my Notebooks on one device, but I need to be able to get to my notes on multiple devices. Please help me fix this, I do not want to lose all the work I have already done.

Thank you.

Hi SmithB2,

Based on your descriptions, you meet the OneNote sync issue so that all new created pages can only be “saved offline”.

1.      First, you mentioned a weird thing that “When I go to the online OneNote two Notebooks with the same name appear, one without the new pages and the other is unable to be opened and gives this message: Something when wrong: Sorry, we are unable to reach the server right now. Please try again later.”

Generally, it’s not possible to create two notebooks with the same name if they are stored under the same OneDrive folder. Do you click “OneNote” icon and see them via “recent” tab? If so, I would like to explain that this is not the best way to find the correct notebook because the recent list doesn’t refresh very soon so that some deleted/renamed/moved notebook name will still show up there with an invalid link. To find the existing notebook, the best way is to click “My notebooks” tab or browse your OneDrive library folder to find them.

Please check whether you can find the related notebook in the way above I mentioned, then check whether you can open them in OneNote Online, and open in OneNote desktop app. Then check whether the sync issue is gone.

2.       There is a possible cause that notebook was ever renamed, moved, or deleted. Actions like this will break the sync connection between OneNote Online and OneNote client app. The only way is to back up the un-synced notes in OneNote client app > close the notebook from OneNote client app > find the related notebook Online > re-open the notebook in OneNote client app so that the correct sync connection is built. Closing and reopening notebook like this can also fix some general sync issue.

You mentioned that “Notebooks with the same name appear, one without the new pages”, if this notebook is the related one just without new pages, you can copy the un-synced pages from OneNote client app to OneNote online, then close notebook from client app then re-open to check whether the sync issue is gone.

If you tried the steps above and fail in any of them, please provide us any information with screenshots or more explanation so that we can help you further.

Regards,

Rena
