AutoCad - SharePoint Integration

Good Afternoon

We are storing AutoCad Drawings on SharePoint.  They are .dwg files.  There was an AutoCAD Icon visible last week on SharePoint when you selected a .dwg file.  This Icon allowed you to view the drawings once you registered for an AutoDesk account.  In order for this to work properly we had to move the reference drawings in to the same library.  This icon seems to have now disappeared from SharePoint.

Currently, it is really awkward for users open drawings as they must download the drawings to their computer.  If the users make changes they must then upload or drag them into SharePoint.   We have been examining free drawings viewers that are again awkward to install for users.

What we would like AutoCAD drawings to do in SharePoint are as follows:

our technicians to open the documents directly into AutoCAD from SharePoint without having to download the document;

to open the document in AutoCAD and edit it in AutoCAD and be able to press save and it automatically gets uploaded onto SharePoint into the Library is was downloaded from;

that when we select create new documents i.e. word, excel that AutoCAD would be an option also.

We are wondering what are you doing with drawings in relation to SharePoint as we would like to store them with our records and not on a separate solution?

What viewer would you recommend?

What does SharePoint Developers have in mind for AutoCAD/ AutoDesk in the future?

All help and suggestions would be greatly welcomed.

Dear Dorothy,

The AutoCAD Web App has been integrated into SharePoint Online. So your requirements seem to have been achieved in SharePoint Online. You can view and edit the .dwg files in AutoCAD Web App directly in SharePoint Online. However, you may need to have an active AutoCAD LT subscription to edit them online.

Regarding the issue “This icon seems to have now disappeared from SharePoint.”, could you upload some related screenshots?

Note: Remove any private information before uploading the screenshots.

Do you see  the Open option>AutoCAD(web app)  when you select the files? The AutoCAD Web App may need to be opened with the latest versions of the Chrome and Firefox browsers.

Best Regards,

Cliff
