Embedded PDFs in Excel change name after saving file

This issue is occurring for only one person, so I know the issue is his computer. He embeds PDFs into Excel files and then renames the embedded file, but when he saves the file, the name always changes. This only happens with PDFs. I read up on this issue and it apparently is a known issue for many years and on many versions of Windows and Office. We reinstalled his Office 365 apps, but the problem still occurs. I've read so many articles about this happening, but not a single person who has been able to resolve it.

    Hi Scoot,

Sorry for the inconvenience caused by this issue.

Here are my test steps, please have a look:

    1. Create a new workbook.
    2. Click Insert>Text>Object>PDF.
    3. Click Change icon on the setting page then change the caption as 001:

    1. Click OK then select the PDF file test. And the display name changed:

If that is your scenario? If not, please share with me the detailed steps about how do you reproduce this issue.

If it is your scenario, to check if this issue is file related, please create a new workbook to check if your user can rename the embedded pdf file normally. If this issue happens to all workbook, please try another pdf file to check if it is pdf file related.

Besides, please also share with me a copy of issue related workbook and pdf file to let me have a better understanding of your scenario. To protect your privacy, please share with me your file via Private Message.

    Regards,

    Neo

That works perfectly on my computer, but when I try the same thing for the end user, there's no PDF icon. The object shows up in the spreadsheet as a blank icon. We ended up figuring out a workaround because this user is getting a new computer in the next few months.
