I have a CD on which I stored old microsoft word files and they were stored as .wps files. I have tried to convert them into PDF and into word files but cannot. I get gibberish. I used WPS Office, Convertio but neither converts the files into intelligible English. Any suggestions?

WPS files are Microsoft Works documents. In order to open them in Word you need the appropriate filter for the Works version that created them. The filters are linked from the downloads page of my web site. To batch convert the files (having installed the appropriate filter) see Document Batch Converter
