Word's Editor checks

Word is not showing the spelling mistakes in my documents. I've followed the instructions, and the Editor pane tells me "All of Editor's checks are turned off. You can change this in Settings". So I click on settings, and the section that says "Choose the checks Editor will perform for Grammar and Refinements" is greyed out and the drop-down menus won't operate.

Is there any other way to turn this back on?

Thanks.

Thank you. I worked out in the end that my input language for apps had been set to Maori. That was a mistake as I just wanted a Maori keyboard. Although I kept changing the default proofing language, the input language wasn't changing, so every new Word doc I opened had Maori as the language. Have finally fixed it. Thanks for trying to help.
