    The real answer is the markdown web part is basically useless and it was confusing to include it.

    The Markdown web part allows you to add text to your page and format it using Markdown language. The Text web part is used to add paragraphs to your page, formatting options like styles, bullets, indentations, highlighting, and links are available.

    (Markdown is a lightweight markup language with plain text formatting syntax. Its design allows it to be converted to many output formats, but the original tool by the same name only supports HTML.)
