MathType Usage

I recently purchase a new laptop and I was surprised that Mathtype no longer comes with Office.  I was able to download a 30 day trial but to continue using it, it cost $40 for educators.  I'm a math teacher who has used Mathtype for many years (Equation Editor in older Office versions).  The equation editor that now comes with Word is not user friendly and not easy to use or edit so I'm hoping for something a lot better.  Suggestions?

The official word from Microsoft is that, with an update rolled out on January 10, 2018, Microsoft Equation 3.0 has been deprecated in all versions of Word back to Word 2007. For more information, see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4057882/error-when-editing-an-equation-in-office.  In addition to the workarounds provided in that article, see https://0patch.blogspot.si/2018/01/bringing-abandoned-equation-editor-back.html

If you are not happy with the Insert Equation facility on the Insert tab of the ribbon, if you do not purchase, MathType, the trial version will revert to a functionally equivalent to the Equation 3.0 facility that has been deprecated by Microsoft for security reasons.

MathType 7 didn't not allow me to continue with a basic version.  The next response by Stefan seems to be working though.

Are you saying that you can no longer use MathType Lite after the trial period expired?

Thanks for the information.  The 0patch blog looks especially useful.

Step A tells me I have 2 options:  (a) find a copy of Office you haven't updated yet, or (b) reinstall Office from your original media and apply all updates up to and including November 2017 updates. Once you do any of these, you will find these files in the EQUATION folder (possibly along some other files in Office 2016):

Is there an easy way to find a copy of Office that wasn't updated?  As for reinstalling, is  "original media" referring to the download purchase that I made when I purchased the computer?  This problem started from day 1 so I have doubts that reinstallation would do anything.  I like to think I'm pretty good with using technology but I haven't done much in the way of tweaking software to meet my purpose.

My last laptop that I bought a few years ago did as you said, it reverted when the trial period was up.  The new laptop did not do that, as I hoped it would.

Thanks again for the help you sent.
