I am trying to edit a view in my SharePoint List.  When I select edit current view, I get an error.  When I try to save as the current view, I get an error that that says a column does not exist, which is doesn’t ( I deleted it).  I can't create a new view either.  How do I resolve this?

Thanks,

Ryan

    Hi Ryan,

Since the deleted column is visible in show/hide columns and is not visible in List Settings and we have already tried checking in SharePoint designer 2013, I suppose the column is corrupted and needs to be deleted from the backend. In this case, I’ll suggest you contact your admin and ask them to contact support to create service request to get the column deleted from backend. Apologize for not being able to do it from our side, we have limited resources to perform it. Your understanding is much appreciated.

To raise a case, you can create a ticket in Office 365 Admin center > Support as an admin. Or contact phone support to report this issue directly: Contact support for business products - Admin Help

    Regards,

    Neha

    Hi RyanMJ5,

Since the column is not properly deleted, I believe this is the reason behind the error you are getting when creating a new view and editing existing view. Let’s try deleting the column again from List Settings.

    1. Click Settings, select List Settings.
    2. On the List Settings, in theColumnssection, select the name of the column that you want to delete.
    3. Scroll to the bottom of the Edit Column pane and then select Delete.
    4. Select OK to delete the column and the data in the column permanently.

If the above method, didn’t delete the column, then let’s use SharePoint designer 2013 (it is a web and application design program used to build and customize SharePoint sites and applications).

    1. Open SharePoint designer 2013 (press the Windows key on your keyboard and type SharePoint Designer into the search box). When you open SharePoint Designer 2013, the backstage view appears, because SharePoint Designer is designed to work only with SharePoint, you must connect SharePoint Designer to an existing site.
    2. Click Open Sites and enter the site URL https://tenantname.sharepoint.com/sites/Sitename/
    3. Once the site opened, click List and Libraries on the left navigation panel, on the right, you’ll see all the list created in the site.
    4. Click on the affected list name to open, under Customization section, click Edit Lists columns

           5. Select the column name and click Delete on the ribbon

           6. click Save

After trying the above steps, check whether the column is deleted or not.

To download and install SharePoint Designer 2013, see Download and install SharePoint Designer 2013.

Note: Overall, an user needs to be a member of one of the following groups at the site collection level to be able to use SharePoint Designer and modify SharePoint content:

    • Site Collection Administrators
    • Designers
    • Owners

    Thanks,

    Neha,

I tried using another browser and get the same error.  I also cannot create a new view by clicking Settings in the List, then List Settings and Create View at the bottom of the page.  I tried this in two different browsers and get the same error an my colleagues also get the error.  When I go to column settings, then show/hide columns, I can see the two columns that do not exist but I do not know where there are being stored or why they are not deleted.

    Thanks,

    Ryan

    Hi Ryan,

Sorry for the inconvenience caused, we’ll try our best to help you resolve the issue.

Please try using another browser and check if you get the same error. if possible, please verify with your colleagues and see if they can edit the view successfully.

You mentioned, “**I can't create a new view either”, to try another method, click Settings in the List, select List Settings and try creating a view by clicking Create View at the bottom of the page, check if you can create a new view now.

As you are getting the error after deleting a column, please go to List Setting and check if the column is deleted and not visible under Columns.

    Thanks,

    Neha
