Issues with using Quick Edit on Large List

We are following the guidance in this article to manage our large list:

https://support.office.com/en-us/article/manage-large-lists-and-libraries-in-sharepoint-b8588dae-9387-48c2-9248-c24122f07c59

Our list has over 5000 items. We have create a view with only ONE column in it. This column is indexed. We are not sorting our view, we have no totals shown. We also know that this view returns approx. 400 items.

The view displays perfectly in the browser. However when we click on "Quick Edit" we get the dreaded list view threshold reached error and we can't do anything with the list.

It seems the thresholds for Quick Edit are different? Or more importantly the recommendations in the article above from Microsoft don't apply to Quick Edit. If that's the case, then how do we get Quick Edit to work on a large list.

Hi Jeff,

Based on my test, I can use the Quick Edit option with no problem on my large list. Here are my steps:

  1. Create a list of 5500 items using Excel and Quick Edit;
  2. Edit current view > use Filter to reduce the number of items;
  3. Save the view > go back to the list > click Quick Edit.

By the way, I encounerted the same error the first time I use Quick Edit. But the error is gone when I changed the view and tried again. So this error may be because the view is new created, or is caused by the way you created the view, but generally, the Quick Edit options works fine in this scenario.

In this case, I'd suggest that you may check it again to see if the error is gone if the view is created not long ago. If the error still exists after a long time, I'd appreciate it if you may share more details about the structure of your list, and the steps of creating the view, so that we could check it for you on our side.

Best Regards,

Nathan

    Thanks for the reply. It turns out that one of the columns I was filtering on in my view was NOT indexed. (I didn't notice it firsthand). After creating the index and waiting a few minutes, I was able to get Quick Edit to work.

    Thanks for the help!
