transferring microsoft office

Hello,

recently I purchased a new laptop that runs the latest version of Win10 and all its software, however I am unable to activate Microsoft office (word, powerpoint etc) on this laptop.

On my previous laptop, I have run office perfectly for over 3 years without issues. I have undergone all the available steps in an attempt to deactivate office on my old laptop to reactivate on my new one, however I am never able to find the current subscription on the subscriptions page and thus cannot deactivate anything. In addition to this, I have located the original product Key and have tried to redeem this way, but I only get the message 'you may be entering a product key from another version of office' (the subscription was for office home and student 2013).

Please provide some guidance on what I should do, as I am approaching the university year and need to have office up and running by then (without spending an additional $200 for a new key).

-Thanks

Office 2013 can only be active on one computer at a time. If you can't find the license in the MyAccount page you are right, you can't deactivate it.

    .

    There are 2 problems here.

    .

The message about "another version" is common problem on new computers. Most new computers come with a "free trial" of 365. Even if you install the correct version, ie 2013, Windows will send the 2013 Product key to 365 (the first office installed).  Go to Control panel > Programs and Features. Check to see if this is the situation. Do you have both Office 365 and Office 2013 installed? If you do, uninstall 365, Repair 2013, then check to see if the activation has worked. If not, submit the key again to activate 2013.

    .

Once you get past the first problem there is a good chance you will encounter another, along the lines of "too many activations". This is due to the 1 computer limit.  In the past MS was easier about transferring installations to new computers, but now they are being difficult. You will have to do a phone activation. First try doing the automated activation, it may or may not work. If it fails, phone again, but this time wait for the option to talk to a live "service" rep. Explain that you have uninstalled from the old computer and are transferring the license to this new computer. They should allow the activation to complete.

    .

There is one more common error you could encounter. A message saying that phone activation is no longer supported. That is a lie.

Activation Phone Support - phone activate

If you have an activation specific error, ie things like “invalid” or “blocked” product key, you specifically have to contact the “phone activation” support reps.  Apparently “normal” support has no way of transferring you to them … <sigh>

The process you need to follow is rather round about:

    ·    File Menu > Account Command

    ·    Click on the “About” button

    D:\Public\Pictures\2013 Office Phone Activation Wizard.png

    ·    Copy the Product ID

    ·    If Office is not already activated, there will be an ‘Activate’ button, click on it

    ·    Select phone activation option,

    ·    this will display appropriate phone number for your geographic location.

    ·    Phone them

    ·    do NOT reply to initial prompts

    ·    wait, a long time, until you are offered the option of talking to a “service” rep

    ·    explain problem to them

    ·    ask to be transferred to a supervisor when front line support can’t help you
