The add new field button is not available in the Access inventory template table (inventory sheet)... even in datasheet view. I can't find any way to get it to show up. It is present when I go to create a new database from scratch or in other templates,

These are the tables I see in that template. I can right click, choose Design, and add fields. This is the preferred way because you can set all properties.

If you REALLY want the "Click to Add" option as the last column in datasheet view, make sure File > Options > Current Database > "Enable design changes for tables in Datasheet view" is checked.

Right click on the table in the Nav Pane and select Design mode.
