Notebook 404 Not Found

Hello,

I've been using the Office that comes with Windows 10 (the one without any "files" tab), and have just logged into my school account.

For a while, I've noticed that my notes aren't syncing, and I'm not sure what the problem is.

When I try to sync it directly, I just get a "saved offline (error)" notice where it should say saved, and I don't know where this notebook is in my computer (I can't seem to find it?) so I can't try to force it onto OneDrive.

When I try to access it through OneDrive, only one of my three notebooks are accessible; the ones that don't work lead to a "404 Not Found" page.

In addition, the one that works also can't seem to find the pages the notebook has.

Also, when I try to open my notebook through Office 2016, the message that pops up is "We couldn't open that location. It might not exist or you might not have permission to open it". But, I created that notebook, and so I'm not sure what it means by "it might not exist".

How would I go about:

  1. saving my current notebook online
  2. Finding my notebook on OneDrive
  3. Finding my notebook on my computer when there isn't a "files" tab

Hello,

The problems actually all resolved themselves once I accessed the notebook through the Recent files and got it to work on my computer. I fidgeted around until I got it to appear in my normal OneDrive folder as well so that I could access it through other computers too.

Once the notebook synced to the online OneDrive, I just left the situation alone.

Thank you for your help,

Lori

    Hi Lori,

Thank you for clarifying the situation.

We suggest you ensure you are using the same OneDrive account when you use OneNote for Windows 10 and OneDrive online.

You mentioned "The ones that I've created on my computer only show up in the recent tab of OneDrive"

Can you open the notebook from OneDrive to OneNote for Windows 10(desktop app)? In OneDrive Recent files, select the notebook and click Open from the ribbon, then choose Open in OneNote.

We also want to confirm information below for further troubleshooting:

1.Do you save your notebook in personal OneDrive or OneDrive for business?

2.Please share with us screenshots of the error message you get, and let us know your steps before getting the errors.

    Appreciate your time and effort.

    Best Regards,

    Tina

    Sorry; I guess I wasn't very clear.

None of the notebooks I've created directly on my laptop appear in OneDrive.

That is, if the notebook was originally created online through OneDrive, then it shows up on both Windows 10 OneNote and also OneDrive online.

The ones that I've created on my computer only show up in the recent tab of OneDrive, which I don't know how to move to the main body of OneDrive.

Also, when I try to share the notebook directly to a different account that I have, I get:

    SP.RequestContext.current/web/GetFileByUrl(a@a1)/ListItemAllFields/

However, when I use the recent files to try to share, then a part of my notebook does get shared; I'm not sure what happened to the two or so new sections I've created (I guess it doesn't get synced, though I don't know why?)

    Hi Lori,

According to your description, you are using OneNote for Windows 10.

OneNote for Windows 10 doesn't create local notebook, all notebooks are saved in online location, in OneDrive for business or personal OneDrive.

So for the first question 1) saving my current notebook online, to prevent them from losing, firstly I suggest you backup them.

You can manually copy them from OneNote client, paste them to OneNote online. You may create a new notebook in OneDrive online, paste the notes in it to save them. Or backup them in Word documents.

For the second question 2) Finding my notebook on OneDrive, you may try following:

1.Go to OneDrive on the web, check if you can find your notebooks in Recycle Bin, also check the Second-stage recycle bin. If yes, restore them. Please refer to Restore deleted files or folders in OneDrive

2.Try to restore your OneDrive to a previous time. More info about this: Restore your OneDrive

Note: we suggest you firstly backup all new items created after the date you want to restore.

    Best Regards,

    Tina
