    Hi nightearth,

Sorry for this inconvenience caused by this issue.

After our test, we can click Open in App and it can work perfectly in desktop Excel. Based on your screenshot, you are using mac but category of this case is Windows.

We assume that you are suing Office for mac. So we suggest you try these steps to narrow down this issue.

    1. Go to Macintosh HD open the Library folder. Click Containers click and Move this folder to other local path.

Open Finder> Click on Commnad + Shift + G> Enter ~/Library/Containes> Scroll to com.microsoft.Excel> Move to other location  like Desktop.

Then restart PC try to launch Excel application from Online again.

    1. Open other shared Excel file in Excel Online and try to open in Excel application again. To check if only this situation happens to specific file.
    2. Change a different browser to test the result.

In the shared tab of OneDrive, we can’t sync or download these files, we can only see them in the shared with me tab. As a workaround, you can open this shared file in Excel directly. Open Excel application, after sign in click Home button-> Shared, find this shared file and open it in Excel application. Moreover, i want to share this article with you about the file size limits for workbooks in SharePoint Online.

If the issue still persists, we want to collect more information to move further:

    1. Does the issue happen to other Online files?
    2. Can you take a screenshot of the Excel version? Excel-> About Excel. (Please remove personal information.)

    Regards,

    Ivy
