After reading your issue description, I have performed related test on my side, but unfortunately, I can’t reproduce your issue, to open files in desktop application, please make sure you have configured Opening Documents in Client Applications by Default sitecollection feature in Site settings.****Open Settings> clickSite settings> Site collection features> Locate the Open Documents in Client Applications by Defaultfeature in the list, and then click Activate. Please refer to this article: A SharePoint Online list item attachment doesn't open in the Office client application as expected.
If the issue still persists, please provide the following information:
- Does all the users facing the issue or a specific one?
- Do you still get same behavior when open other sites?
- Which file are you trying to open?
- Could you download the file from SharePoint document library to the desktop and open it? Would you get the same message?
- Could you provide the screenshots when you try opening the problematic file?
