Import table from SQL Server into PowerPivot Error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Hello,

I am attempting to import a table/query from a SQL server into PowerPivot via Get External Data -> From Database -> From SQL Server, however, I am receiving the following error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

I am successfully connected to the SQL server and can successfully preview & filter the tables within the database, but when I select finish the error appears.

Can you provide assistance or guidance on how to resolve this issue?

Thank you,

Zack

Hi Zack,

Assuming that your query syntax is correct. The way I would add an external SQL db is by following the following steps (not from the power pivot window):

Click on the Data tab, then Get Data > From Database > From SQL Server Database.

In the Microsoft SQL Database dialog box, specify the SQL Server to connect to in the Server Name box.

If you want to import data using a native database query, specify your query in the SQL Statement box.

Select OK.

Let me know if works this way :)

Thanks

Thank you for the quick reply and suggestion, Raffaele. This is a good workaround to have readily available.

I was able to add my external SQL db - with the same query I originally used -  with success through the PowerPivot view. I'm not sure what changed, but I am not having an issue with any of my queries now, which was not the case last week.

Thank you for the quick reply.

    Zack
