email splitting

Hi, I would like to set up a hybrid email setup where some users use office 365(exchange online) emails and all the benefits that come with office 365 business(excel,Sharepoint etc). While the rest remain on a normal web hosting environment E.G GoDaddy, HostGator.

The reason is the majority of the employees do not need access to any office 365 products and simply need to send occasional emails. Thus an online exchange email license for those users is not financially feasible or smart.

Please advise on a solution.

Kind Regards

Hello Dean Armstrong (deana),

Thanks for your post in Microsoft community. Generally if your current email provider provide email forwarding, then only you can achieve this settings. For this you need to manage your Office 365-related DNS records at your DNS hosting provider, rather than having Office 365 manage these records for you. One more thing some Office 365 features won't be available such as free/busy information, users can not use Office365 spam filtering , etc.

Here we are providing you a short scenario how you can achieve this requirement and for the detail information kindly refer Can I pilot Office 365 with just a few email addresses from my custom domain?

  1. Sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center
  2. From the domain settings, verify that you own the domain you want to use and once verification completed, modify your DNS records.
  3. Mark the domain as shared in Exchange Online, select domain and set as Internal Relay and save the changes
  4. Now create User account from O365 admin center
  5. Update DNS records at your DNS hosting provider (no need to change/update MX records)
  6. Now set up email forwarding at your current provider side and check with test email.

Thanks and regards,

Ankita Vaidya
