There is no official response. The ability to scan into Word was removed many versions back without notice. The available Office Support articles about "scanning into Word" are these:

https://support.office.com/en-us/article/scan-and-edit-a-document-7a07a4bd-aca5-4ec5-ba73-4589ac8b9eed (this provides information for installing Microsoft Office Document Imaging for Word 2007 and 2010 but not for "Newer versions")

https://support.office.com/en-ie/article/insert-scanned-text-or-images-into-word-b4ae150e-319f-4e18-b27b-418f1d690823 (this is for Word 2013, 2016, 2019, and Office 365 and does include a direct scanning option, although it requires a smartphone or tablet)

You might also want to see https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/msoffice_word-mso_other-mso_2016/how-to-add-a-scan-function-to-word-20132016-or-365/7b8b3bb4-b73b-412b-bc01-42c43bc0e29c

The closest thing to an official response from Microsoft is probably found in Word's Help, as shown at https://www.windows10forums.com/threads/word-2013-scan-a-document.4584/

Sorry, but this is a user-to-user forum and very few contributors are Microsoft employees which means that no official answer can be given (unless there is a KB article available, of course).

For a workaround, use the more complex (longer) of the two macros in MVP Graham Mayor's article at http://www.gmayor.com/scan_into_word.htm.
