Cannot Access Popularity Trends

Hi there,

I am having an issue where I am unable to access popularity trends for my site, despite being its creator and an owner. I am wanting to use this to see some analytics for my site.

When I click into it, it says that I do not have permissions. However, when I request access, my own email address is contacted. When I approve the request, I am still unable to access popularity trends.

Does this mean that I must be a Site Collection Admin or even a Global Administrator to access this?

Thanks,

Jericho

    Hi Jericho,

Generally, with full control permission for a site, we will be able to access the popularity trends for the site.

The permission page you provided before indicates you don't have Add and Customize Pages permission for the site, so I suggest the tips above to enable custom script.

However, to run the related command to enable custom script for the site, it requires to use SharePoint admin account or Office 365 global admin account. If you are not the admin, you may need to contact admin and enable it for you.

For your reference: Allow or prevent custom script

Please feel free to let us know if you are able to access popularity trends for the site after enabling custom script. We will help you do further troubleshooting.

    Best Regards,

    Tina

    Hi Tina,

    Thanks for these useful tips!

Are there any alternative methods to access popularity trends that does not involve global admin permissions?

    Kind regards,

    Jericho

    Hi Jericho,

Thanks for getting back to us and sharing the detailed information.

If you are a SharePoint online global admin, you may try following to enable custom script and see if it will fix the issue:

1.go to SharePoint admin center>Settings>Custom Script, if the two options are set to Prevent, select Allow for both as below:

2.Install SharePoint Online Manage Shell and run the following commands:

    1. connect-SPOService -Url https://contoso-admin.sharepoint.com -credential ******@contoso.com

    Note:

a.the URL is your SharePoint Admin Center URL: https://contoso-admin.sharepoint.com

b.The credential is SharePoint online global admin's credential.

    1. set-SPOsite <SiteURL> -DenyAddAndCustomizePages 0

Note: the SiteURL is the URL of your site.

If may take 24 hours for the settings above to take effect.

    For your reference:

    Best Regards,

    Tina

    Hi Tina,

    1. Yes, I only get the error message about not having access after I click Popularity trends. Below is the error that I see:

    1. Below is a screenshot of the results of checking my permissions.

    1. I do not believe that this is a site specific issue, as I have created two separate sites that both come across the same issue.

    Regards,

    Jericho

    Hi Jericho,

Sorry for the inconvenience, we will help you do troubleshooting for the issue.

We test as a site owner to access popularity trends of the site and it seems we cannot reproduce the issue.

Based on your description, you are the owner if the affected site, we'd like to confirm the following information:

1.Do you access popularity trends via Settings>Site settings>Site Administration>click Popularity Trends?

Do you get the error message after you click Popularity Trends? Please share a screenshot for the error message you get.

2.In the site, please click Settings>Site settings>User and Permissions>Site permissions>Check Permission>enter your email address and click Check Now.  Please share with us a screenshot of the result.

3.Does the issue happen when you try accessing Popularity Trends of a specific site?

    Best Regards,

    Tina
