Include level number from doesn't work

I have defined level 1 and 2 headings. Level 1 has numbered normally. Level 2 won't take the level 1 numbering. When I select level 1 in "include level number from" as shown in the picture below nothing happens. The box stays blank. All the level two headings are numbered 1.x currently regardless of the level 1 number.

Hi

[Answer edited by CK for completeness]

I see that you are associating your numbering with styles~~, but have not named your list style~~. Step by step instructions for setting up your numbering can be found here:

http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/numbering20072010.html

This method may seem a bit of work but not using it for important work is asking for trouble. Once you have it set, you can save a template with it and use that template for new documents where you need good numbering that can survive editing.

In the dialog it looks like you have accomplished the linking. Doug's question about Heading 1 style is tied in with Shauna Kelly's procedure.

[MVP Doug Robbins points out that naming the list style is not essential even though in Shauna Kelly's instructions. He knows more about how Word works than I do and I believe him. Those finding this thread should read all of the responses, not just this one.]

I hope this information helps.

    Charles,

Assigning a name to the ListNum field is completely unnecessary.

The more likely cause of all of the Level 2 numbering starting with 1 is that the Level 1 numbering was NOT linked to the Heading 1 style so that while there might have been a second instance of a Heading 1 style in the document, it was probably numbered in some other manner.

Thanks for your response. Headings were linked and there were no duplicates. Setting up a list style resolved the issue.

Thank you so much! Knowing how to save and edit list styles will be so useful, how did I not know about that! As soon as list style was in place numbering was sorted.

Is the Level 1 numbering linked to the Heading 1 style and do you have a second or more instance of Heading 1 style in the document?

Given the numbering style that you have started with, it is not really necessary to use the "Include level number from:" facility.

If you cannot sort it out, send me a copy of the document, referencing this thread in the covering email message and I will investigate the issue.
