Conditional formatting based on cell format, not value?

Is there a way to set up conditional formatting in Excel for multiple cells based on a specific cell/section's format rather than value?

I am going through a list and, depending on how relevant a phrase is, I'm changing the color of the text to red, orange, or green. For some of these, I know for a fact that if the phrase contains one of a number of words that it's definitely going to be irrelevant and therefore red. There are subsequent columns of data connected to each of those phrase cells and I'd like their text color to match. If I have conditional formatting set up for a column, is there a way to then conditionally format each row based on the color of its first cell (the one that is already conditionally formatted). I guess what I'm really asking is if I have cells that have colored text (some from conditional formatting, some done manually), can I set up conditional formatting for other cellsbased on the color of another cell? This makes sense in my head but it's a little hard to describe. I'm assuming this is not possible. The only things I found were about quick analysis but that doesn't allow me to do what I want (unless I'm doing it wrong). I can't use a formula because the other columns I want formatted based on the first all have different values; some are letters, some are numbers, some are dollar amounts or decimals. I want groups of cells to be have their text color formatted based on the color of another cell.

Hi lindsaygdm,

I have read your post carefully and I want to share with you my idea.

Only using conditional formatting is not enough, it should be achieved with combining conditional formatting and customer function.

I try the method in following thread with no luck, but the thought is absolutely correct. It seem like some error in the Macros of function.

How to conditional format based on cell color
