I have uploaded a 2.2 Mb file on sharepoint to collaborate. After 3 reviews, about 6 comments with 3-4 lines of text, the file size has exploded to 94 Mb, which makes online editing impossible!
This surely cannot be standard sharepoint behaviour ...

It's not a normal behavior, I have tested by my side and 3 comments with 3-4 lines only take up 7 KB in my SharePoint online. Could you create a new blank workbook and add some comments to see what happen?
I have 10 previous versions, restored to the small file size, made 3 comments and boom, file 135 Mb ....
If I can't keep previous versions, what use is versioning???
Check if there are multiple versions of file, delete unneeded previous version of files.
You can download to check the real size of the file and upload again, make a comparison.
