Altering Section 2 header alters Section 1 header

Good day,

I am absolutely frustrated attempting to stop Section 2's header from altering Section 1's header. No matter what I do, including creating a new document and copying and pasting the information, any time I try to alter Section 2's header, Section 1's header changes, as well. I have inserted a Section Break, and the headers even read "Header - Section 1-" and "Header -Section 2-" None of the headers are linked to the previous. I don't even know what other information I need to provide for help with this. I have read through several step-by-steps and keep ending up with the same results.

You can use the following tool and it will analyze every header and footer (including those not displayed) in your document, telling which is linked to others.

Note that each section can have up to three different headers (and three different footers), which will be the case if "Different first page" and "Different odd and even" are both selected (in the Page Setup dialog box or on the contextual Header & Footer ribbon tabs). Each type of header (and each type of footer) must be unlinked separately from its corresponding "neighbor" in the preceding section.

However, if your document does not make use of either of these options, something else is going on.

I fully support Charles's suggestion that you share the document so that we can have a look.

You need to provide a link to a copy of the document stored on OneDrive or DropBox.  That way, we can look at the actual document rather than just your description. Purge any confidential or proprietary information before saving the copy.

What you describe cannot happen, but it appears to be happening. If they are not linked, changing one will not change the other.

It may not be necessary to change the header, though. See StyleRef Field.
