Insert Comment option is missing from right-click menu

I am using Excel 2016 on Windows 10. Today, the "Insert comment" option disappeared from the right-click pop-up context menu. When I right-click on a cell with no comment, there is no option to add one. If I right-click on a cell with a comment, I can edit or delete the comment. On the Insert tab of the ribbon, the Comments section is grayed out. This problem is affecting all spreadsheets that I have tried.

I googled the problem and tried every solution offered but none of them worked. How can I add comments to cells again?

Thank you

    Hi,

We created a new Excel spreadsheet, tried to insert a comment in a cell and we did not encounter the same issue.

To provide an accurate solution, kindly answer the following questions:

In the meantime, we suggest launching Excel in safe mode an then check if the same issue persists. Also, make sure that your Excel app is up to date

Today the problem is gone. I have not rebooted my computer or changed anything. My computer was in Sleep mode overnight. I have no idea why yesterday I could not insert a comment and today I can. A day has simply passed.

I am using Microsoft Office Home and Student 2016

    Version 1902 Build 11328.20146 Click-to-Run

Thank you for your prompt reply!

The exact same thing has happened to me.   This occurred immediately after a Microsoft update (on 10-April).    What's incredibly odd is that I can bring up other workbooks and am able to see the insert comment option in the right-click menu.   In the workbook I am working with at present, I do not see the insert comment menu.   My experience is identical to the original poster.
