MS Project resource in split shift

Hello,

I have a project that has a day (0900-1700) and night (2300-0800) shift and where the resources can work either, but a resource may not work more than 8h per day.

What I'm not able to see is overallocation of a resource if I've used him on a day and night shift. In theory this would be 9h in a day (day/night) or 15 h (night/day).

My settings are:

  • Project set at 24h calendar
  • Resources set at 24h calendar with 100% units
  • Tasks set at either day or night

Thanks in advance for the help,

Dan

    Thanks cookiekantode/Howard Dale/Trevor Rabey

I've done "resource 1 day" and "resource 1 night", but my ultimate goal is to not book "resource 1" on both a day and night shift.

Our resource flip day/night depending on the project and I'd like to plan this better then looking at the calendar view and making sure there is no issue.

From my understanding, this is simply not possible... thanks again for the input.

    Dan

Drop the part about the resource being able to work either shift but can't work more than 8 hours. This is an extra complication that may not be necessary.

Make two resources, a dayshift and a nightshift and an approriate calendar for each one.

Then make a task which has a duration of, say, 40 hours. Assign both resources and then check the task usage view. Each resource will only be assigned to his shift.

When you make the shift calendars be careful about the definition of the work weeks.

    You cannot have 2300 - 0800.

    M 0000-0800, 2300-0000

    T 0000-0800, 2300-0000

    W 0000-0800, 2300-0000

    T 0000-0800, 2300-0000

    F 0000-0800, 2300-0000

    S 0000-0800, 2300-0000

    S 0000-0800, 2300-0000

    Dan --

The source is your problem is setting the resource calendars to the 24 hours calendar.  You would need to specify either the day shift calendar or the night shift calendar as each resource's calendar.  However, given the fact that your resources could either work the day shift or the night shift, I doubt that will work for you.  Given your requirements, I would leave everything set up as it is and not expect Microsoft Project to show overallocations.  Instead, simply look for them on a day by day basis by scanning the Resource Usage view with the task assignments collapsed.  Hope this helps.
