Just in case I missed it, is it still impossible to do basic custom tags on OneNote?

Yeah please read my question carefully.

Let me clarify... custom means something made to fit a need.  Not just 'different' ... that article shows nothing about creating my own tags, only preselecting from a limited library that Microsoft decided was appropriate.

In evernote and others I can define a tag as easy as typing into a text box ...

Pity ON still lacks in this, it makes searching and organising a breeze .... I like the tabbed notebook paradigm, but I also need the modern flexibility of tagging

    Thanks for the resposne.

Here in Microsoft no idea will be wasted, we suggest posting this concern to our OneNote UserVoice so that our software engineers and developers can check your concern and if it gets enough votes it will be added to the next update.

    Regards,

Thank you for clarifying your concern. Now that you have verified that you want to customize your tags in OneNote, you can try the following steps below:

    1. Click Home on the ribbon.
    2. Choose find Tags.
    3. Select Customize Tags on the lower right.
    4. Click on the New Tag box.
    5. Then create your own Tag.
    6. Click on  OK.

Please take note that Tags in OneNote is not available on OneNote app for Android. You can only use the Tags feature in OnoNote 2016 desktop app as a workaround. After tagging a particular part of your notebook, you can sync your notes and view it on OneNote app for Android.

Let us know if you have other concerns.

    Hi Daniel,

I replicated your concern, it seems that the feature you're looking for is not available in Onenote for Android. However, you can try a workaround by tagging your notes using OneNote 2016, then sync the notebook and check if the tag can be seen in OneNote for Android. Here's a link on how to tag a notebook in OneNote 2016.

Let us know if you have other concerns.
