cannot remove file from screen

I created doc some years ago.  I updated it and later changed in from 2018 to 2019 - this seemed to upset it - it had never been read only before.

Now i cannot even remove it from the screen to deal with anything else!

The message on screen when I try to close it says

2Word cannot save this file because it is already open elsewhere

(C:\Users\User|Appdata...\Normal.dotm)

This is a different situation. Are you trying to save a file as Normal.dotm? Or do you have the Normal template open for editing? Do you have copies of Normal.dotm in more than one place?

That message means you have more than one document open and have made changes to your setup that have to be saved in the Normal.DOTM  The simplest fix is to say no to saving these changes. Close all other open documents, then open any you need to again.
